He talked to me about organizations. It took me a while to understand he was right.

By MTR · WFPX Communications & Publishing

A few months ago my son and I were talking about AI the way most fathers and sons talk about it now — half technology conversation, half business conversation, half something neither of us had quite named yet. He is thirty. He has built something of his own, from nothing, in a business I did not hand him and could not have handed him. And somewhere in that conversation he said something that I have not been able to put down since.

He was not impressed by the model. He was impressed, or rather concerned, by the organization around it. I had spent decades in restructuring — workouts, waterfalls, covenant breaches — learning that the asset is rarely the problem. The structure around the asset is the problem. My son, without ever having sat in a bankruptcy court, had arrived at the same conclusion from the other direction: as a builder, watching AI get bolted onto companies that had no clear idea what they wanted it to do.

The Generation That Skipped the Hype

There is a way that people my age talk about AI that treats it as a wonder — or a threat — arriving from outside. My son’s generation, the ones actually building with it every day, talk about it more like a tool that will do exactly what the organization around it tells it to do, and nothing more. He was not asking whether AI was going to be smart enough. He assumed it would be. He was asking whether the businesses using it would be organized enough to deserve what it could do for them.

That distinction sat with me. It reframed thirty years of my own work in a single sentence. Every failed restructuring I ever touched failed for the same reason: not because the underlying asset was worthless, but because no one had organized the people, the capital, and the information around a common objective — and no one was willing to stand behind the result when it went wrong. My son had reinvented, from a laptop and a start-up, the same lesson I had learned from airline conservatorships and distressed real estate.

He wasn’t worried about whether the machine was smart.
He was worried about whether we were organized enough to deserve it.
    MTR

Stewardship Skips a Generation, Then Comes Back

I have written for years about the 150-Year Lens — the idea that what we build and how we build it is judged three generations out, not by this quarter’s results. I did not expect to see it handed back to me by my own son, in his own language, about a technology I did not grow up with. But that is exactly what happened. He was describing Seed Theory without knowing the name for it: the tool is only as good as the cultivation around it, and cultivation is a human responsibility, not a technical one.

What he understands — and what a lot of companies twice his size do not yet understand — is that AI does not remove the need for accountability. It raises the price of not having it. A person who is unwilling to own a decision was always a liability. Now that same person, unwilling to own a decision, can deploy that unwillingness at scale, instantly, with a tool that will not stop them.

The Lesson

I did not expect the clearest strategic insight I would hear this year to come from my own dinner table. But it did, and I have not stopped thinking about it since.

It is humans learning how to organize people, technology and intelligence around a common objective — and accepting responsibility for the result.
The companies that understand that distinction won’t simply have better AI.
They will have better organizations.
    — Michael T.
